Decent MRE's. Pretty much in line with the TOTM reduced calorie training meals, same level of packaging and similar contents. Good selection of dishes, but a little repetition in case. Would like to see the packaging cut in half( can literally fit three of these in the bag for one after removing the fluff).
i would have liked to pick out individual meals
As described. Full shelf life!
So... I haven't cracked one open yet, but I can tell you this. They are fresh! (Dec 2015 production date) There is two of each of six dishes.
Penne pasta (vegetarian)
Meatballs in marinara

Asian style beef strips
Mexican style stew

Once I have some, I'll post more, but those are what are in there. Be warned... The nutrition info you see in my pictures is just entree and not all the other stuff. There are drinks, spoons, crackers...All all sorts of other stuff! I'll post ask that as I open them.

Why Buy Calories vs. Servings

How often do you eat the recommended servings on the food that you prepare right now? If you're like me, not very often. So, it goes to reason, if you buy your emergency food storage by the serving, should you ever need it, someone is going on a diet, or you are going to burn through your food preps much quicker than you had anticipated.

Think about this, when you go grocery shopping, do you buy food based on how many servings each product has, or do you buy the amount of food that your family actually eats?

How many calories do you eat each day? The FDA bases all of their nutrition recommendations on a 2000 calorie per day diet. So why do the Survival Food Producers and our competitors offer their pre-packaged food packages based on an average of 1300 calories a day? Simple, it makes the food packages seem less expensive and helps them sell more food packages.

How Does this Work?

If Dad eats 2000 calories a day, Mom eats 1800 and little Susie eats 1400, your family has a daily caloric intake of 5200 calories. If you were to buy a package that is advertised to last "one month", based on serving counts, your family may actually only be protected for ten to fifteen days, unless they eat the "recommended serving sizes" determined by the food producer.

So, if you want to make sure that you and your family is solidly protected for one month, and is eating the same amount of food that they are accustomed to each day, all you need to do is to calculate the family's daily caloric intake with our Calorie Calculator to the left. <<<<

Simply put in the estimated daily caloric intake for each person in the calculator, add the number of days that you would like to be protected, then shop for meal packages that contain the total amount of calories that are needed to feed your family. It's that simple.

Are XMREs "Real MREs"

In a word, absolutely yes. XMREs uses the exact same components that the military uses. However, they are not the same MRE meal configurations that are issued to military personnel. XMRE's are built by the exact same food processors that build the government issued MREs, only they have access to the freshest product vs the surplus product that's xxx amount of years old that hit the aftermarket.

The problem that you will find with ALL sales of military issued MRES is the freshness of the product. If you look at all of the negative reviews on Ebay and Amazon the number one complaint is that the MREs are one, two and three years old by the time they reach the buyer. This is because "real" MREs are either bought by the pallet by retailers like us, or bought at surplus auctions from the government.

MREs are not fast sellers for retailers, and surplus-sold MREs are usually one or two years old by the time they are auctioned. We (Survivalist 101) are a leading national supplier of food storage and even we struggle with selling a single sku while they are still fresh. This is because you have to buy a pallet of every variety of MRE to offer more than one sku or type of MRE.

XMRE has solved this problem for retailers by buying components from various MRE builders and creating their own MRE configurations. This allows us (Survivalist 101) to always have fresh MREs. It also allows us to offer multiple configurations with different calorie and meal counts. So the long winded answer is yes, but they're better, fresher and offer a better variety of options than the traditional MRE than you will find on the market from Army/Navy surplus outlets that carry MREs.

What Are XMREs?

MRE stands for “Meals Ready to Eat”. All the contents of these shelf stable foods are fully cooked and can be eaten hot or cold. An XMRE will provide good taste and proper nutrition while maintaining a safe, long shelf life. Each XMRE replicates the calorie count of a complete meal. There is no need to add water to an MRE. Simply open the pouch and enjoy!  The big breakthrough was the POUCH. Its three special layers allow the food to be fully cooked, sealed and never exposed to the air again. The resulting taste and texture beats any dehydrated and freeze dried food rations.

What Are The Benefit And Its Uses Of XMREs?

Some of the benefits of XMRE are:  Fully cooked – No need to add water, Not Freeze Dried! Moisture, gravy and sauces are retained in their natural form inside our X-MREs, Ready-To-Eat. These meals are ready to eat right from the pouch at room temperature., Home-style taste, Balanced nutrition, Long Shelf life 5 years or more based on date of pack and storage conditions, No refrigeration needed, They can be heated in 5 minutes with boiling water or with our heater pouches, Battle tested, U.S. Military Grade Components, Weightless pack, portable and easy to carry- Easy storage, Water proof, Easy to open – As opposed to canned food you don’t need a special tool or special skills to open it . You just tear open the pouch and you are ready to eat!

What Are Common Uses Of XMRE?

MREs were originally used only in the military, but the truth is that MREs are the perfect option for outdoor enthusiasts, preparedness, emergency situations, on the go meals or for anybody who is planning to be in a situation where regular food supply is not available . The special pouches they use provide a long shelf stable without refrigeration. Many private entities, law enforcement, hospitals, fire departments, FEMA, Red Cross and government agencies storage depend on MREs as a part of their emergency plan for food supplies.  We are also seeing more campers, hikers and other extreme outdoor sport and activity people use them. After all, they are a complete meal, ready to eat, portable, and relatively light weight.

What Is The Shelf Life Of An XMRE?

XMRE promotes shelf stable, ready to eat meals and components that are appetizing in the field as they are when packaged in the factory. Just like the U.S. Military MRE’s and following the USDA established standards for commercially sterile, moisture and oxygen controlled food products, XMRE follows the same methods of preserving our packaged foods.

All MRE Entrees are heat processed to destroy microorganism and inactivate enzymes. This heat process prevents any bacteria from getting in and since the food pouch is sterile, it does not spoil. As for the rest of our components such as bakery and other snack products, these are engineered and packaged in sealed, multilayered packaging material, to prevent the food products from excessive exposure to moisture and oxygen, thus ensuring an extended shelf life.

The above enables XMRE to offer a guaranteed shelf life of 3 years at 80°F (27°C), or for 6 months at 100°F (38°C) for all of our previously produced entrees and food components, from date of XMRE assembly/pack date printed or embossed in all our bags and cases. We keep all of our products under ideal storage conditions. This allows us to stand behind our guaranteed shelf life. Some of the components from time to time may have production dates prior to our pack or assembly dates.

Shelf life of our XMRE product follows the same standards as set forth by the U.S Army Natick Soldier RD&E Center's study and evaluation of the military’s Meals Ready to Eat (MRE), which employs identical type of packaging and production technologies as our XMRE Meals.

Can I Freeze An XMRE Pouch ?

Freezing an XMRE retort pouch will not destroy the food inside, but repeated freezing increases the chance that the pouch lamination will fail. MRE pouches are designed to withstand 1,000 flexes, but repetitive freezing does increase the failure rate by a small fraction of a percent.

What Is Included In A Typical XMRE Meal Kit?

Each complete meal ready to eat MRE  kits provides a balanced nutrition with a generous amount of food components. Configurations ranges from 500 to 3000+ calories per meal. MRE components, i.e, entree and side dishes, bread items, snacks , desserts , beverages and other portion control packs. Most XMREs come packed in 6 or 12 meals to a case.

Are XMRE’s Dehydrated Or Freeze-dried?

No. MRE’s are totally different. Unlike dehydrated or freeze dried foods which both require water to reconstitute them, MRE’s are precooked “in the pouch” and retain their full moisture like canned food items, just with a much longer shelf-life.

Can XMRE’s Be Eaten Cold?

Yes. Each MRE entree can be eaten cold, directly from the pouch, they are perfectly safe to eat cold.

What’s The Best Way To Warm/heat Up An Mre?

U. S. soldiers and thousands of Emergency Relief workers around the world have been forced to eat MREs cold. They weren’t intended to be eaten cold, but one of their great advantages is that they can be. MREs have served their purpose well with no reheating in personal emergencies, family emergencies, and city or state emergencies (earthquakes, toxic spills, hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, floods, etc.).

XMRE chemical heater pouches can be bought separately or they may come with each MRE kit. Placing the XMRE in the chemical heater pouch provides a high tech way to heat an MRE pouch with no fire or flame. Adding water will cause a harmless chemical reaction which produces heat and warms the food pouch within 10 -15 minutes, safely and quietly. Simply follow the instructions on the pouch.

If you don’t have a heater pouch, XMRE pouches can be heated in a variety of different ways depending on the situation. Below you will find a few additional and common ways of heating them.

1) Boiling for 3-5 minutes – take the pouch and place it in clean boiling water heated from available sources: fire, heating tabs, or stoves.
2) Placing next to a non-liquid heat source: radiator, engine block, or even the human body. Be careful of burning or melting the pouch if the heat source is too hot.
3) You can use the sun to warm the pouch by simply laying it in the sun. It’s simple and it works.
4) Microwave 2-3 min. after removing from the pouch. The pouch contains an aluminum, non-microwaveable layer which gives the pouch such a long shelf life.
No matter how you heat your XMRE entree meal, although the foil pouch is very strong and durable, it can be damaged if too high a temperature is applied. NEVER apply direct flame to the pouch like from a BBQ or campfire. The outer and inner layers of plastic laminate will melt and contaminated the food.
